Vercelli has always been her home and the idea of leaving it never crossed her mind. Unlike her brother, Caterina has always remained in her birthplace although she never would have dreamed that working in the fields would become her primary occupation. She still cherished the vivid memories of Saturdays and Sundays spent at their grandparents’ farmhouse, but she never expected that cultivating rice would have fascinated her so much. If they had told her ten years ago that cultivating these lands would become her job, she would have laughed out loud! Plowing the land, driving a tractor … these are not women’s work, or so she thought! Yet today she is the one who looks after the fields, monitoring the growth and ripening of the rice, overseeing all the processing steps. In short Caterina puts a lot of care and dedication into her work, because she has found that that is the true secret to a high-quality rice.
To her Terre Alte Villarboit is the revelation that a determined woman can do things she had never dreamed of before, including working the land. Try and tell her now that plowing the land is not women’s work… if you dare… Catherine would have a lot to say about that!
